Two women arrested for stealing gold jewellery from Erode house

ERODE: Two women have been arrested on charges of stealing nearly 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery from a house at Rajajipuram in Erode.The burglary happened in the house of R Selvaraj, a contractor in an oil company. On June 13, Selvaraj went to Nasiyanur to visit his relatives and returned home the following day. He found the front door lock broken. On entering the house, he found an almirah broken open and gold jewellery missing.Selvaraj lodged a complaint with the Karungalpalayam police, who inspected the house and launched an investigation. Two women living nearby were taken in for questioning, during which they confessed to having broken into the house and stolen the jewellery, police said.The suspects have been identified as K Mariammal,24, and S Priya,34. Police recovered Rs 10 lakh in cash from them. Police said the women got Rs 10 lakh after selling the jewellery. Deputy superintendent of police Muthu Kumar said: “We ensured quick action on the complaint and cracked the case. The arrest of the two women and the recovery of cash is a significant breakthrough. Further investigation is underway to trace the sold jewellery and verify if the suspects are linked to other thefts in the area.”They were remanded in judicial custody.
