Two ‘businessmen’ abscond with gold, silver from Coimbatore; probe on

Coimbatore: Two men claiming to be businessmen from Gujarat have reportedly made away with over 3kg gold and about 50kg of silver, which they sourced from more than five local jewellery merchants on Big Bazaar Street in Coimbatore.The incident came to light on Monday, when one of the local merchants visited the duo’s shop to collect payment for the gold which he had supplied.Police said the duo who introduced themselves as Kumar Soni, 50, and Vijay Ambalal Soni from Gujarat, opened a new jewellery store on Bazaar Street in the city, some 20 days ago. To stock their business, they reportedly sourced over 3kg of gold jewellery and 50kg of silver from more than five local jewellers. They also handed over advance payment to all five merchants, to earn credibility. The local merchants had also visited the shop, before making business deals with the duo.However, on Monday, when one of them went to collect the pending amount, he found the new store deserted and the duo missing. On being informed of the developments, all the affected merchants filed a joint complaint at the Big Bazaar Street police station on Tuesday.Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to trace the accused.
