CHENNAI: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Saturday announced its withdrawal from the DMK-led alliance, ending a long-standing partnership that had endured through multiple elections in Tamil Nadu. The decision was taken at the party’s general council meeting held in Chennai. IUML said decision on alliance will be taken during the local body election. The move comes months after the 2026 assembly election, in which the DMK allotted two seats to IUML. The party contested from Papanasam and Vaniyambadi and won both constituencies.IUML allied with DMK for the first time in 1962.In a significant post-election development, Papanasam MLA A M Shahjahan was inducted into the TVK-led govt headed by chief minister C Joseph Vijay and currently serves as minorities welfare minister, giving IUML representation in the state cabinet despite the party contesting as part of the DMK alliance.
